- Restaurant: Caffè Caldesi
- Cuisine: Italian (Tuscan focus)
- Location: Marylebone
- The bill: Not too sure for this one…
- Ambience: Down-to-earth-sophisticated.
- Jelly Good Food Rating: 8/10
Caffè Caldesi is real Italian food (Tuscany focus) in authentically posh Maylebone. The crowd is just like that too – all waiters speak Italian and majority of clientele are stereotypically well-to-do, middle-aged English: plenty of silver haired gentlemen in baby pink and baby blue shirts.
Attached to the restaurant is a cookery school – courses include matching food and wine as well as traditional Italian cooking.
The owners – Katie and Giancarlo have appeared on Market Kitchen, BBC Masterchef, BBC Breakfast and Saturday Kitchen so the restaurant has a lot to live up to.
Despite all of this, the place somehow manages to avoid being pretentious.
The cooking is good and walks the line between relaxed and gourmet effortlessly. The menu is interesting because there are many dishes which are not common, even for Italian restaurants, such as the Stufato di Agnello e piselli con vela di pane tostato (Slow-cooked lamb and peas, toasted bread).
JellygoodFood Bottom Line:
Good quality, authentic Italian place – upmarket but relaxed, in a beautiful part of town.
